About AERMACCHI

Aermacchi is a company that has made significant contributions to the two-wheeled industry. The company began as an aviation firm, building Nieuport monoplanes in 1912. After the Second World War, founder Giulio Macchi saw a golden opportunity to provide Italians with affordable and efficient transportation, thus beginning his motorcycle empire.

In 1950, the company produced its first bike called the Convertible and motorcycle fans were loving it. It was a crossbreed between a scooter and a motorcycle. Its engine was under the saddle with most of its parts enclosed. The second-born came in 1953 and was given the name Zeffiro. It had a two-stroke engine with the option of choosing either a125cc or a 150 cc engine displacement.

As years flew by, the bikes became better and more sophisticated and by 1955, the Monsone and the Corsaro joined the family. However, Aermacchi’s scooter line was involved in a fierce battle with well-established firms such as Lambrettas and the beloved Vespa. Aermacchi ditched its scooter production and decided to focus on motorcycles. The 1960s saw a shakeup in the company with Harley-Davidson purchasing a 50% stake of the company. The remaining stake was sold to AMF-Aermacchi-Harley Davidson.

After the acquisition, Harley-Davidson funded the race, proudly branding the motorbikes with its name on the fuel tank. The firm posted commendable performances in the motorsport arena. In the 1966 and 1968 races, the team was placed third in the World Championships with Renzo Pasolini and Kelvin Carruthers riding for the team. Carruthers showed his bravery yet again in 1969 by competing in the highly decorated Isle of Man TT. Rider Walter Villa steered the team to victory winning the 1974, 1975, and 1976 races in the 250cc class and a win in 1976 in the 350cc class in World Championship races. Harley-Davidson also managed to scoop a win in the Grand Prix races.

In 1978, the Italian branch of the business was turned over to the Castiglioni brothers, pioneers of Cagiva Motorcycle. The company operated for sometimes before falling into extinction.
