Your New York driving record is a document that provides comprehensive details about your driving history, including:

  • The number of driver license points
  • Your traffic tickets, violations, accidents and fines
  • Your New York driver’s license status (suspensions, validity, expiry date, revocations etc.)

NOTE: Your Social Security number (SSN) does not appear in your New York driving record.

Certified Abstract

All certified New York driving record abstracts that you request from New York Department of Motor Vehicle show your personal information, driver information, driving history and alcohol or drug-related convictions from the past 10 years.

Masked Driving Record Abstract

If you request another person’s driving record without written authorization, you will receive a masked driving record abstract. This record will not reveal any personal information about the driver whose record is requested. Instead it will contain the class and current status of the driver license, endorsements and restrictions, details about moving violation convictions and accident history, including driver’s license suspensions and revocations. This record can be requested by mail or in person at the Central Department of Motor Vehicle in Albany.

Non-Certified Driving Record

Although the New York Department of Motor Vehicle provides certified driving records, you can use third party providers when requesting uncertified driving record. This record contains the same general information as your certified record, except that it is not certified.

Title Abstracts

You can also request title abstracts from the NY DMV. This record provides detailed information about your vehicle, such as the address and the full name of the vehicle owner.

Registration Abstracts

A registration abstract is a document that shows vehicle information, including the name and mailing address of the vehicle owner and vehicle registration expiry date.

Order Your New York Driving Record

You can request a registration abstract, title abstract or certified abstract driving record from NY DMV by phone, online, in person or by mail. For non-certified driving records, you can use third party providers.

Order Online

The New York Department of Motor Vehicle abstract online service can be accessed by anybody intending to request certified New York driving record. No sign-up is required if you intend to receive your driving record by mail. If you want to download the retrieved copy, you must sign up. You cannot use the New York DMV online service if you want to request a driving abstract of another driver, if your address is outside of the U.S., there is no record of your current address at NY DMV or there is no record of your Social Security number (SSN) at NY MDV. To receive a downloadable copy, visit the MyDMV application portal and login to provide the requested information. You will be required to pay $7 driving record request fee. To request a certified copy of your driving record to be mailed to you visit the NY DMV Abstract Order portal. You will be asked to enter your 9-digit NY driver’s license number, date of birth and last 4 digits of your SSN. You must also pay the applicable fee.

Order by Phone

You can also request your New York driving record by phone. To do so, call the NY DMV office using their hotline (518) 486-9786. You will need to provide your New York driver’s license information and pay the $5 phone service fee and $10 search fee. Your New York driving abstract will be mailed to you within 2 weeks.

Order in Person

You can also request your New York driver abstract in person. To do so, visit your local New York DMV office. Take with you a completed Form MV-15C (Request for Driving Record Information), Proof of your identity and Payment for the $10 driving record fee. New York DMV offices accept payment by cash, credit or debit card, money order or check. Your New York driving abstract will be mailed to you within 2 weeks. If you visit the Department of Motor Vehicle Central Office in Albany, your New York Driving record will be given to you within the same day.

Order by Mail

You can also request Your New York driver abstract by mail. To do so, send a completed Form MV-15C (Request for Driving Record Information) with Proof of your identity and Payment for the $10 fee to the NY DMV. Use the email listed on the form. Your New York driving abstract will be mailed to you within 2 weeks.

Order a driving record while renewing your New York driver’s license

You can order your New York driving record while renewing your New York driver’s license. To do so, you must:

  • Mark the blue box found on your renewal notice from New York Department of Motor Vehicle
  • Pay your New York driver’s license renewal fee plus additional $10 search fee.

You may use a check or money order payable to New York Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Your New York driving record will be mailed to you within 2 weeks.

Order another Person’s Driving Record

In New York, you cannot request another driver’s driving record online or by email. You must make your request in person or by mail. Under the Driving Records Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), your driving record can only be released to other entities in accordance with the stipulated law. Under this law, you must obtain consent from other drivers in order to request their records. If you are an employer, there are several reasons why you can order driving records of your current or prospective employees:

Order by Mail
