Who Sees Your South Driving Record

Under the Driver Privacy Protection Act, your SD driving record can be accessed by:

  • Auto insurance companies
  • Anyone with written permission from you
  • Civil, criminal and administrative courts
  • Employers conducting employment screenings
  • Towering Companies.

Ordering Your South Dakota Driving Record

By mail

You can also request your South Dakota driving record by mail. You will need to provide a:

  • Completed South Dakota Driver Licensing Request From. This form requires notarization.
  • Copy of your South Dakota driver’s license.
  • Check or money order of $5.

  • Completed South Dakota Driver Licensing Request From. This form requires notarization.
  • Copy of your South Dakota driver’s license.
  • Check or money order of $5.

Order a South Dakota Commercial Driving Record

South Dakota commercial driving record can be ordered in person or by mail. To order it by mail, you must:

  • Complete SD drivers Abstract Request Form
  • Enclose a $5 check.

Employer, Insurance and Government Requests

If you’re an employer, a government agency or insurance company, you can request South Dakota driving record of another person. You can do so in person or by mail. To order by mail:

  • Complete a Request to Obtain South Dakota Abstract of Driver’s Operating Record. Make sure this form is notarized
  • Provide payment for $5 per record order.

Correcting errors on South Dakota Driving Records

If you find errors on your South Dakota driving record, contact the South Dakota (DPS) to have them corrected. You can use their hotline number (800) 952-3696 or visit a nearby South Dakota exam stations mentioned above. Your record will immediately be checked and rectified immediately.
