New Jersey motorcycle license is required in order to legally ride a motorcycle on any road within New Jersey.

Obtain a Motorcycle Permit

To qualify for a New Jersey motorcycle permit, you must be at least 17 years old. To apply for this permit and motorcycle license, you will need to:

  • Visit your local MVC Agency. You will need to take with you: Completed application forms. Your current New Jersey driver’s license if you have one. Documents to show proof of identity.
  • Pay a $5 to fee for examination permit.

You will need to pass the written knowledge and skill tests. If you master the Motorcycle Manual and Driver Manual, you can comfortably pass these tests. You will need to present your examination permit at any New Jersey Driver Testing Center to take appropriate tests. The examination permit is valid for 90 days.

Motorcycle Examination Permit Restrictions

Once you obtain your New Jersey motorcycle examination permit, you are free to ride your motorcycle. However, you must abide by the following restrictions:

  • No riding your motorcycle from a half-hour before sunrise to half an hour to after sunset.
  • No riding on limited-access highways or state toll roads.
  • No carrying of passengers.

NOTE: Motorcycle permit holders in New Jersey are no longer required to be accompanied by a rider.

Motorcycle License Road Test

You can schedule your New Jersey road test online. Scheduling is done at least 20 days from the permit validation date. Not all DMV road test locations offer these kinds of tests. A road test will not be required for those who pass a New Jersey Motorcycle Safety Education Program course. Otherwise, you will need to visit your local Driver Testing Center to take the road test. You will need to take with you a registered and insured motorcycle. Ask a licensed motorcycle operator to accompany you. Once you pass the road test, you will be issued with a permit and road test slip. Take these two documents to any local MVC Agency immediately. You will need to pay $24 fee for a stand-alone New Jersey motorcycle license.

Moped License

You will need a New Jersey Motorcycle License to ride a moped, commonly referred to as a motorized bicycle. In order to qualify for a moped license, you must be at least 15 years old. However, this type of license is not required if you hold a regular New Jersey driver’s license, commercial driver’s license or a motorcycle license. To obtain a New Jersey moped permit and license, you will need to:

  • Visit any local New Jersey MVC Agency. You must take with you a completed application forms.
  • Present proof of identity.
  • Pay examination permit which is usually $5.

You have to master various manuals in order to pass your tests. Once you are equipped with enough information, you can then approach any Driver Testing Center to take your tests. Take with you the examination permit. After completing the tests successfully, you will be issued with a permit that will allow you to drive during daytime without supervision. You may then schedule your New Jersey motorcycle road test online. If you pass your New Jersey road test, take the road test slip and permit to any local MVC Agency ASAP to be issued with a photo moped license. You will need to pay $6 fee. You must surrender your moped license when applying for a regular New Jersey motorcycle license.
