In order to legally operate a motorcycle on public roads and streets in Oregon, you must obtain a motorcycle instruction permit or motorcycle endorsement regardless of whether you have a regular driver’s license or not. The Team Oregon program offered by the Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division is a program that you can enrolled in to get professional motorcycle training. This program offers training to beginners and experienced riders who want to sharpen their riding skills. The course covers skills that include:

  • Traffic strategies.
  • Braking maneuvers.
  • Protective apparel.
  • Effective turning.
  • Avoiding obstacles.
  • Maintenance.

This basic training course is required for all people applying for new motorcycle endorsements. In fact all applicants aged 61 years old or younger must complete this basic course. Instruction Permits

A motorcycle instruction permit allows riders to only ride their motorcycle during daylight only. During this period, a rider must be accompanied and supervised by a licensed motorcycle rider above 21 years old. To obtain a learner’s permit, you must visit the DMV office in person. Remember to take with you the following requirements:

  • Provide documents showing Proof of Oregon residency.
  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Provide documents that show proof of identity and address.
  • Hold a regular Oregon driver license.
  • Complete Form 735-173 (Driver License/Identification Card Application).
  • Pass a motorcycle endorsement knowledge test.
  • Pass a vision screening test.
  • Pay appropriate fees.

If you are under 18 years, you must get authorization from your parent or legal guardian. They must append their signatures on the Driver License/ID Card application. Oregon motorcycle instruction permit is valid for 1 year from the date of issuance. This permit is not renewable. If it is expired and you want to obtain another one, you must reapply for another one. Otherwise within 1 year of holding this permit, you must successfully complete the knowledge and vision tests.

Motorcycle Endorsement

To get a motorcycle endorsement on your Oregon driver’s license, you must apply for it in person at the nearest Oregon DMV office. To do so, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Provide documents showing proof of Oregon residency.
  • At least 16 years old.
  • Provide documents showing proof of identity and address.
  • Hold a regular Oregon Driver License.
  • Complete Form 735-173 (Driver License/Identification Card Application).
  • Present a Basic Rider Training Completion Card or show proof of successfully completing the endorsement knowledge test and an on-cycle drive test.
  • Pass a vision screening test.
  • Pay appropriate fees.

If you are younger than 21 years old, you must show proof of successful completion of the Team Oregon Motorcycle Basic Rider Training Course.

Fees

The fee for an Oregon instruction permit is $23.50. For the Oregon motorcycle endorsement on the existing driver’s license, the fee is $87. For Oregon motorcycle endorsement without Oregon driver’s license, the fee is $144. Credit or debit cards will not be accepted by the Oregon DMV.
