Licensing Requirements

In order to legally drive a motorcycle in the District of Columbia, you must obtain a motorcycle endorsement on your Washington DC regular driver’s license. This can be done at the Department of Motor Vehicles. You shouldn’t operate motorcycle without a regular Washington DC driver’s license. The Washington DC law defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle with two or three wheels.

How to Get a Motorcycle Endorsement

To obtain motorcycle endorsement on your Washington DC driver’s license, you must already have a valid Washington regular driver’s license and be at least 18 years old. You must also pass the motorcycle demonstration test commonly referred to as on-road test. You have an option of providing proof that you passed this test in Virginia or Maryland. You will need to visit the Brentwood Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV), to add the motorcycle endorsement to your Washington DC driver’s license. This DMV office is located at 1205 Brentwood Road. You will need to fill and submit the Washington DC driver’s license application. You must also submit proof that you have passed the Washington DC motorcycle demonstration test and then pay applicable fee for a motorcycle endorsement.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has a mission to improve motorcycle training, education and operator licensing. This body also offers a safety course in northern Virginia and the neighboring Maryland. It does not offer courses in Washington DC.
