Kansas Motorcycle Registration

Last Updated on March 22, 2018 by Jason Mason

The process of motorcycle registration and titling in the State of Kansas is similar to that of registering a motor vehicle. Initial registration must be done in person at any local licensing agency. Registration renewal can be done online, by mail or in person.

First-time Registration

First-time motorcycle registration and titling are done in person at any local Kansas country treasurer’s office. Be sure to go with the following items with you:

  • A signed and notarized certificate of title or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO). A title is needed if the motorcycle is used and the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin is needed if the motorcycle is new.
  • A completed Odometer Disclosure Statement.
  • Proof of motorcycle liability insurance.
  • Sales tax receipt if the motorcycle is new from a dealer. If you bought a used motorcycle, you will need to pay sales tax at the time of registration.
  • Proof of payment of personal property taxes.
  • A signed Title and Registration Application.

You must also pay $10 title fee and registration fee that varies depending on your place of residence and motorcycle’s purchase price. If there is no lien on the title, you will be issued with a new certificate of title within one month from the date of application.

If you are registering an out-of-state motorcycle, then you must take it for the VIN inspection. The Kansas Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division Highway Patrol has several motorcycle inspection stations throughout Kansas.

Registration Renewal

The DMV will send you a motorcycle registration renewal notice prior to the registration expiration date. You can then proceed to renewing your application by mail, online or in person.  You will need to fill out the renewal notice and mail it back or take it in person to any local country treasurer’s office. If you choose to renew it in person, make sure you bring your proof of insurance and license plate number.

You can also choose to renew your motorcycle registration online. Make sure you have a valid credit card to pay the registration renewal fee. Kansas Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will verify your motorcycle liability insurance policy online.

Proof of Insurance

Proof of motorcycle liability insurance is a must when you register or renew your motorcycle registration. You must therefore provide paperwork with your name, policy number, name of the insurer, motorcycle make, VIN and registration expiration date.
