About Land Rover

The name Land Rover came from the Rover Company whose successor is thriving today under Jaguar Rover owned by Tata Motors. Initially, the name Land Rover was assorted to a car model manufactured by the company in 1948. This car became so popular that in the year 1951, it was awarded a Royal Warrant by King George VI.

In the following years, the Rover Company was sold to various automotive groups. Land Rover Ltd. was formed in 1978 as a subsidiary of British Leyland Motor Corporation. Land Rover cars rapidly became popular in the country. But British Leyland as a company was in trouble all through these years.

A few years later, 1988, it was decided to create a separate Land Rover Company with its reins still in the hands of British Leyland. But not for long, because come 1994, the whole Rover group was purchased by the BMW group.

Just 6 years down the line, BMW sold the Land Rover component of the BMW group to Ford Motor Company. Under the banner of Premier Automotive Group, Land Rover saw its further development. And it was not too long after, that Ford bought the remaining Rover Group from BMW.

It was in 2006 that Ford bought the complete Rover Group, but a year later there was news of selling the Jaguar and Land Rover. A number of groups showed interest and put forth their bids. But it was the Indian Automotive giant Tata Motors who had the cake in the end and became the owner of Jaguar and Land Rover.

Tata Motors gave £1.7 billion for this deal and in 2013, Tata Motors restructured the dual brands to become one single entity. Thereupon it was called Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC. Since then, Land Rover has been heavily marketed in the Indian market and has shown good numbers in sales and revenue for the company.

All throughout the years, Land Rover has been synonymous with robustness, strength and amazing quality. It is good to see that Tata Motors has managed to maintain brand integrity and its reputation for all these years.
