Indiana Motorcycle Registration

Last Updated on March 22, 2018 by Jason Mason

If you have purchased a motorcycle in Indiana, the next step is to apply for motorcycle registration. The process of registering a motorcycle is the same as that of registering a car. However, you will not be required to take your motorcycle for emission tests.

Indiana Residents and New Residents

If you are a new resident in Indiana, you must obtain motorcycle registration within 60 days of establishing Indiana residency. You will face some penalties if you fail to register your motorcycle within this period.

You will need to provide your current Indiana or out-of-state certificate of title to receive an Indiana license plate.

Then, you will need to go in person to any local license branch to register your motorcycle. Make sure you bring the following items with you:

  • Your current Indiana or out-of-state title, or the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.
  • Odometer statement.
  • Proof of Indiana motorcycle liability insurance.
  • Proof of Social Security number.

New Motorcycles

If you have just bought a new motorcycle from an Indiana dealership, you will need to title and register it at any local Indiana license agency. Be sure to bring the following items:

  • Your new title.
  • Bill of sale or dealership receipt.
  • Proof of Indiana motorcycle liability insurance.
  • Proof of Social Security number.

Used Motorcycles

If you have just acquired a used motorcycle from a private seller, you will need to visit any local Indiana license agency to register and title it into your name. Be sure to bring the following items:

  • Your new title.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Proof of Social Security number.

Motorcycle Registration Renewals in Indiana

You will receive a registration renewal notice when your motorcycle registration is about to expire. You can then proceed to renewing your registration by mail, in person or online.

By Mail

You will need to fill out the renewal notice card and mail it back to the licensing agency. If you don’t get the renewal notice; contact the BMV office on phone at (888) 692-6841.

In Person

You may also renew your motorcycle registration at any local licensing agency. Complete the renewal notice and bring it to the licensing agency along with your license plate number, current registration, proof of insurance and social security number.

Online

You can also renew your motorcycle registration online. This is the easiest and convenient way. You will need to have your Indiana driver’s license number, and either your Federal identification number or Social Security number.

Motorcycle Registration Fees

The cost of registering and titling a motorcycle varies depending on a number of factors. Contact your local licensing agency to help you calculate your costs.
