About Panoz

Panoz is an American manufacturer of custom-made, luxury sports cars. Daniel Panoz founded the marque in 1989; the company is its founder’s namesake. According to Panoz’s account of their history, Daniel Panoz originally worked at Irish manufacturer Thomspon Motor Company until 1988 when the company went into liquidation. Taking advantage of the situation, Daniel Panoz acquired the rights to a notable frame that Frank Costin built for Thompson Motor Company. Subsequently, Daniel Panoz set up his own company in 1989- Panoz Auto Development. Today, the company is owned by his father, Don Panoz.

Panoz has been taking part in racing competitions across the globe since 1997 when Don Panoz entered the brand into the world of racing. Don thought that this would be a good way to introduce his son’s cars to the world. Five years earlier, in 1992, Panoz built its first car- the Panoz Roadster. To build the car, Panoz used the chassis that Daniel Panoz had bought from Thompson Motor Company. Much of the car’s internal comprised parts from Ford’s Mustang, including the engine and transmission. The AIV Roadster succeded the original in 1996. This new car was built predominantly from aluminium and was America’s first aluminium-intensive vehicle.

Soon after, the marque created the Esperante GTR-1, an endurance racing car meant to compete at 24 Hours of Le Mans. Two street-legal versions of the car would also be produced. Around the same time, inspired by the Le Mans tournament, Panoz established the American Le Mans Series. This tournament comprised a mixture of endurance and sprint racing. The competition was run regularly until 2014 when it merged with the Rolex Sports Car Series.

Panoz prides itself on its hand-made cars. Its first car, the 1992 Roadster, was entirely hand-made, employing ten persons for the purpose. It continues to make custom, hand-made vehicles to this day and prides itself on the exclusivity of its vehicles. Today, it is based in Hoschton, Georgia in the USA.
