About GMC
When we talk about the automobile market, General Motor Company (GMC) lands on the top of our minds. They have been carrying their legacy since the beginning of the twentieth century while designing state of the art automobiles. GMC began in 1902 with the inception of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company.
After working for seven years, it's founder William C. Durant declared that the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company will be a subsidiary of General Motor Company. After gaining power over the Reliance Motor Vehicle Company in 1908, Mr. Durant reformed the General Motors Truck Company by integrating Reliance and Rapid in 1911.
General Motor Company was behind the production of 600,000 trucks for US Defence Forces during the second world war. Due to evolution from the same platform, GMC and Chevrolet had similar trucks back in 1920 but differed only in the case of the engine. Over time both have made significant changes in the vehicle engine design and both also differ in the case of their customers.
General Motors Company got its official name after years of acquisition by General Motors which included taking over the Yellow Cab bus and taxi manufacturer partially in 1925 and completely in 1943. After this acquisition, the name was GMC Truck and Coach Division. Further, in 1981, it was integrated with GM Worldwide Truck & Bus Group. The year 1987 was not good for GMC as it led to the cessation of bus production. With this, the GMC Truck Division was formed and was officially named as General Motor Company in 1988.
By the end of the 20th century, dealers gained the liberty to sell trucks and cars specifically from entry to the middle level. General Motor Company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002. Acadia, GMC’s 1st unibody crossover SUV was unveiled in 2007 and in the following year, its predecessor Envoy was stopped from manufacturing. GMC ceased the production of its medium-duty commercial trucks in 2009 after one hundred years. Based on their GM Theta Platform, GMC launched the “Terrain” mid-size crossover SUV.
Currently, GMC began producing pickups and commercial trucks. Its SUVs, vans, light-duty trucks, are brilliant in both design and performance. GMC also used to manufacture fire trucks, ambulances, heavy-duty trucks, military vehicles, motorhomes, and transit buses, and medium-duty trucks but its not part of its current product portfolio.
