About Smart

The idea for SMART cars was first conceived by a popular company named Swatch. After the CEO, Nicolas Hayek observed the reasons why people use cars, their experiences and what changes he can make, he came up with the concept of Smart cars. His belief was people with a taste of small, stylish and smart cars have been ignored in the market. Thus, he planed to create a car using the same fabrication and tailor-made concept of their hit timepieces.

A German-owned automotive brand, it is located at Böblingen and it produces small, micro and subcompact car designs. The factory is in Hambach in France and it is locally referred to as Smartville.

Hayek however, was confronted with many challenges. Inadequate resources and the huge cost of distribution, he decided to partner with other automobile companies instead of competing with them. His efforts towards partnership proved abortive. This led Hayek to Mercedes- Benz who decides to roll with the concept. The collaboration of these two led to the name ‘Swatch Mercedes ART’-a hybrid of swatch and Mercedes Benz. Without much ado, a highly innovative stable car of City-Coupé and City-Cabrio was born in the years 1998 and 2000. Competing even with the traditional sedans.

Smart has undergone several revisions and expansion after then. The latest edition was made and Smart City-Coupé (C450) & City-Cabrio was renamed smart ForTwo in 2004. The aim is to increase efficiency and providing solutions to drivers. This they have achieved by including compartments where drivers can keep wallets and also cell phones.

The first developed electric smart ForTwo was in 2006 with the fourth generation following it ten years later. The most recent boast of 17.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with 80 horsepower and a range of 99 miles.

From a normal smart to an electric, specialist smart ForTwo. Smart cars boast of high-tech interiors with personalized designs to suit your tastes. Different styles are available like the Fortwo, Fortwo Cabrio and the Forfour with each model having its own unique trim options. When it comes to Smart Cars, they innovate, imagine and act smartly.
